(Case Study) Resolving Pump Imbalance in a High-Capacity Water Pumping Station with Motor Current Signature Analysis

Client: Water Pumping Station
Industry:
Water Utility and Infrastructure Management.
Issue:
A mechanical imbalance caused by debris denting the pump impeller leading to elevated vibration levels, posing risks of downtime and costly repairs.

Background

Maintaining the operational integrity of high-capacity water pumps is critical for ensuring uninterrupted water supply and avoiding costly downtime. Our client – who operates a water pumping station, relied on a 3.3 kV deep well submersible pump for large-volume water supply. Given the importance of this equipment, having a proactive maintenance strategy was essential. Our Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA) system installed at their site fulfilled this strategy by enabling continuous condition monitoring and advanced fault detection.

Developed by a former NASA scientist at Artesis Technology Systems, our trusted partner, the MCSA system leverages patented algorithms for real-time fault detection and monitoring, ensuring unparalleled reliability.

Diagnosis and Insights

During a routine monitoring, the MCSA system identified a pump imbalance issue, prompting a detailed further analysis. Cross-referenced SCADA readings confirmed elevated vibration levels of 4.64 mm/s rms on the Z-axis of the pump casing (suction side). This pointed to potential mechanical faults.

Further investigation in the MCSA software highlighted issues related to the rotor condition and component looseness in their pump. Upon further inspection of the pump, their maintenance team discovered external debris denting the pump impeller, causing unbalanced rotation and excessive vibration. These findings underscored the value of real-time data and automated fault detection for proactive maintenance.

Solution and Recommendation

The maintenance team addressed the identified issue by repairing the dented impeller and clearing the debris. This timely intervention resolved the imbalance, restored the pump’s operational balance, and averted significant downtime for the water pumping station. The Motor Current Signature Analysis system fosters a culture of proactive maintenance for our client’s on-site reliability team, and their facility can also minimize operational risks and optimize resources effectively.
