Issue: Client identified a confirmed bearing fault in a chiller motor. Upon further testing with eMCM, additional mechanical issues were discovered.
Background
The goal of this case study is to assess the diagnostic capabilities of the e-MCM system in identifying the fault accurately and providing a comprehensive status report of an equipment’s condition. A mechanical fault was reported in a chiller motor, specifically a bearing fault. This was confirmed by the client prior to testing. The client sought validation on whether the eMCM system proposed by Vibtech Genesis could serve as a reliable tool for non-invasive fault detection for future round-the-clock monitoring for their chiller motor.
Diagnosis and Insights
The e-MCM motor current signature analysis were able to detect several additional mechanical faults that the client engineer had missed, those faults were mainly: Loose foundation, Transmission faults, Rotor unbalance, Bearing defects.
The eMCM also confirmed the same bearing fault that the client had independently confirmed. Further investigation performed revealed that the root cause of the bearing issue was mechanical looseness, aligning with the system’s diagnostic output. This successful identification validated the model-based detection capability of the eMCM. The report not only confirmed the suspected fault but also uncovered other mechanical anomalies that could contribute to performance degradation if left unaddressed. These findings highlight the system’s value in providing holistic and early diagnostic insights.
Solutions and Recommendations
The eMCM system effectively demonstrated its utility in detecting and isolating mechanical issues, particularly bearing-related faults. Its model-based approach was able to pinpoint the exact problem while also identifying additional maintenance needs.
